June 4th - James 1:27

Religion that God accepts as pure and without fault is this: caring for orphans or widows who need help, and keeping yourself free from the world’s evil influence.   James 1:27
I rather like this verse! It is James' way of saying "don't just talk the talk but also walk the walk" or  "You might claim to be a good person but prove it by your actions."

As someone who suffers from depression I have discovered there is a balance between serving others and looking after myself. Too much serving others can leave me worn out and exhausted, too much self care and I become self-centred and hard-hearted. Do look after yourself - time to yourself is vital but also don't become too self-centred, how can you bless others; a phone call, a card, a prayer for their well-being?    Des

Here are some opportunities for you to bless people if you would like to - please no pressure on this.
I am planning to give a booklet to every year 6 student from Shawley and Epsom Downs School. The booklet is made by Scripture Union and talks about the fears and hope of moving up to 'big' school. The total cost for both schools is around £200.
St Mark's and Merland Rise Church has been running a help line during Covid for picking up prescriptions, shopping etc. We would like to bless all those who have needed to use  the helpline and also those who have been alone or struggling. The blessing comes in the form of a cream tea delivered to their door. We will need people to help with delivery. The budget for this is not finalised yet.
If you would like to help do deliveries or would like to help toward costs please let me know.

Thanks, Des
