Little Miss Muffet

Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet,
Eating her curds and whey,
Then along came a spider who sat down beside her,
And frightened Miss Muffet away!

Poor Miss Muffet! That is a big spider but he looks like he might be quite a fun one, don’t you think?

This is a very old Nursery rhyme, over 200 years old! Lots of mums and dads and grannies and granddads have sung it to their children during this time and they all have loved it. I suppose that is why it has lasted such a long time.

A tuffett may have been a little mound of mud and grass that Miss Muffet sat on. But what was she eating?  Curds and whey. Does you mum or dad ever give you curds and whey to eat? Probably not. It is a bit like cottage cheese where the solid bits of milk have clumped together into curds, floating in the liquid left behind, the whey.

In this picture, the curds are sitting in the sieve and the whey has dripped into the bowl.

I don’t think I would like to eat it just like this, altogether in a bowl. Maybe as part of a recipe it would be delicious.

I wonder if perhaps that is why the spider came to sit beside her….he wanted to try some? He couldn’t catch that in his web could he?

I wonder if when Miss Muffett was frightened away she took the bowl with her or whether she dropped it in her hurry and then the spider ate it?

I wonder if Little Miss Muffet had a first name? What do you think it might have been?
