Story 12 - Joshua & Jericho

The Israelites were about to enter the Promised Landunder the leadership of Joshua. After blessing his people Moses died but had passed to Joshua this responsibility. To enter they had to walk through the Jordan River, just as Moses had led them 40 years before, through the Red Sea. This time the priests, carrying the Ark of the Covenant, led the way.

The Israelites have to conquer their Promised Land. During the hundreds of years they have been away from it, other tribes and peoples have built cities there. They don’t want the Israelites coming back and so they aren’t going to allow them to just walk in and live there. So it is full of enemies!

The first city to be taken was Jericho which was surrounded by huge round thick walls. God told Joshua the military strategy he should adopt to take this city: have the soldiers and 7 priests with trumpets parade with the Ark of the Covenant around the city once every day for 6 days. Then, on the seventh day, they were to march around the city 7 times, then sound all the trumpets and everyone shout at the top of their lungs!! Which makes perfect sense! Joshua must have thought this was extremely weird too but he trusted God. Sure enough  after the 7 day ritual and the primal scream, the walls fall down and the Israelites take Jericho.

How many times did they walk around the walls of Jericho in total?
